What Does Y2K Mean?

What Does Y2K Mean?

Quick answer

On New Year's Eve 1999, banks, government offices and corporations waited to find out whether their computers would survive the turn of the year. Y2K, short for the year 2000, was the name of that fear: many programs stored years with just two digits and could have turned 00 into 1900. Today Y2K mostly means a style, the fashion of the late nineties and early 2000s, with velour, silver, low-rise jeans and oversized logos.

Y2K at a glance

  • Word: Y2K stands for Year 2 Kilo, so the year 2000
  • Origin: the computer problem at the turn of the millennium
  • Era: late nineties to early 2000s
  • Silhouette: tight on top, wide or low below
  • Fabrics: velour, satin, mesh, patent, metallic, denim

  • Directions: Cyber, McBling, hip-hop, pop-punk
  • Comeback: early 2020s, via social networks
  • Mix: one or two pieces with a 2001 look as an accent, or everything at once

Quick questions

What does Y2K stand for?

Year 2000: Y stands for year, 2K for two kilo, so two thousand. Originally Y2K meant the computer problem at the turn of the millennium. Today it mostly means the fashion of that time.

Which years count as Y2K?

The late nineties and the early 2000s. The silver future look belongs at the beginning. The pink glitter of Juicy Couture and Ed Hardy, which the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute calls McBling, belongs at the end, roughly 2000 to 2008.

Is Y2K for men too?

Yes, the hip-hop and skate side of the era is actually the strongest. Baggy jeans, a boxy or slim fit shirt, a track jacket, white sneakers and a trucker cap make a Y2K outfit that looks like today.

Where can you get real Y2K clothing?

Originals such as Juicy tracksuits or Von Dutch caps turn up at flea markets and in second-hand apps, often for little money. Shirts are better bought new, because thin cotton from the 2000s rarely still fits well after twenty years.

Which brands make slim fit graphic tees with a 2000s look?

Tight, short shirts with a loud print are typical of the 2000s. At HUSTLE&PAIN that is DIRT MOUTH: slim fit with shortened, narrow sleeves, 180 GSM, eggshell with a dirt wash and a metallic print in a grillz look. Plainer is ART OF LIFE, a slim fit in 150 GSM with a red PAIN heart on the back.

In detail: millennium bug, icons, outfits

Nearly all the computers survived the night. So did the velour tracksuit, which only needed twenty years before it was allowed back on the street.

Year 2 Kilo: where the word comes from

The abbreviation is quickly taken apart. Y stands for year. The K comes from kilo, meaning a thousand, as in kilogram, and 2K is therefore 2000. It is said the English way, roughly “why-too-kay”. Put plainly, Y2K means: the year 2000.

The term became famous through the year 2000 problem, also called the millennium bug. In the sixties and seventies, memory was scarce and expensive, so programmers stored years using only the last two digits. After 99 comes 00, and whether a banking program turns that into 2000 or 1900 was something nobody wanted to find out on New Year's night. The preparations cost probably more than $300 billion worldwide. When the moment came, surprisingly little happened. In Italy, Telecom Italia sent out bills for January and February 1900.

The name stuck. Today it clings to everything that looks like that era: music videos, mobile phones and typefaces, but above all fashion.

What is Y2K style? Future fever meets celebrity glamour

Y2K style is the fashion of the late 90s and early 2000s. Two moods collide in it, and you can still spot both in every good Y2K outfit.

The first is tech enthusiasm. The internet was new, people gambled on dotcom shares on the stock market, and the future suddenly looked like a product shot. In 1998, Apple brought out the iMac G3 in translucent Bondi blue. In 1999, “The Matrix” hit cinemas, with long black coats and narrow sunglasses. A year later came the Nokia 3310, of which Nokia sold 126 million. Fashion wanted to look the same: silver, chrome, see-through plastic and fabrics that shimmer like the back of a CD.

The second is glamour for everyone. MTV ran around the clock, in Germany it was VIVA, and in 2001 the German girl group No Angels, out of the casting show “Popstars”, stormed to number one in the charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Paparazzi photos filled the gossip magazines. In December 2003, “The Simple Life” started, in which Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie were supposed to work for a month on a farm in Altus, Arkansas, dressed as if for an evening in Hollywood. Anyone famous wore rhinestones even to pick up a coffee.

The endearing thing about Y2K: nobody asked back then whether something was tasteful. It was meant to shine, stand out and look like money or like the future, ideally both.

Y2K fashion: the icons and their moments

Women: from Britney to Avril

On 8 January 2001, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake arrived at the American Music Awards, both in denim from head to toe: she in a floor-length patchwork dress made of denim, he in a denim suit with a denim cowboy hat. It was not subtle. That is exactly why the photo still turns up in every Y2K retrospective.

A year earlier, on 23 February 2000, Jennifer Lopez wore a green Versace dress with a jungle print and a neckline plunging below the navel to the Grammys. So many people searched for it online that Google's former chief executive Eric Schmidt later named the dress as the spark for Google Image Search.

Destiny's Child had no money for a big wardrobe at first. So Tina Knowles, Beyoncé's mother, designed the outfits for stage and appearances herself, and she wrote a whole book about the group's style in 2002. Also in 2002, Avril Lavigne, with a tie over her tank top, baggy trousers and skate shoes, showed that there was a counter-direction too: pop-punk instead of pink.

Men: caps, jerseys, Air Force 1

Among men, the range was even wider. Justin Timberlake wore Von Dutch trucker caps, and Ashton Kutcher, then host of the MTV show “Punk'd”, helped make the brand famous with his. Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit made the cap worn backwards the trademark of a whole nu-metal generation. Pharrell Williams helped make Japanese streetwear such as A Bathing Ape big in America.

In 2002, Nelly rapped “Air Force Ones” and turned the white Nike sneaker into the shoe you had to own. Around 2002, throwback jerseys were everywhere in hip-hop, above all the replicas from Mitchell & Ness: the company's revenue rose from $4.5 million in 2001 to $23 million in 2002.

Y2K fashion: the brands you should know

Many guides write “logos” and “tracksuits” and never say whose. Here are the names.

Typical Y2K clothing: cuts, fabrics, details

The silhouette: tight on top, plenty below

The framework of almost every Y2K outfit is a contrast. On top, something small and tight: baby tee, crop top, tank top, halter top. Below, it gets wide or low, with low-rise jeans in bootcut or flare, baggy jeans, cargo trousers with pockets down to the knee, or the mini skirt. For men, both halves were often wide: XXL shirts and jerseys over jeans that nearly swept the floor.

Get this proportion right and you do not need a single logo to look like 2001.

Fabrics and colours

Velour, satin, mesh, patent, metallic and denim in every wash imaginable. Add pink in every strength, baby blue, lilac, silver and anything that shimmers holographically. Muted tones existed too. They just had no lobby.

Prints and accessories

Flames, tribals, butterflies, rhinestones, stars, slogans and logos, the bigger the better. Add a trucker cap or bandana, small tinted sunglasses or wraparound sports shades, butterfly clips, the Baguette bag under the arm, studded belts, a belly chain and a flip phone with a glittery charm. The tramp stamp belongs on this list too, made popular by the midriff-baring fashion of the late nineties. It is, however, the only Y2K piece you cannot simply hang back in the wardrobe.

Y2K aesthetic: four directions of one look

Y2K is an umbrella term. Look closer and you find at least four directions, and they are quite different.

  • Cyber Y2K: silver, chrome, mesh, patent and typefaces that look like they come from a PlayStation menu. The mood is cool future, as in “The Matrix”, and online the direction is also called Cybercore.
  • McBling: pink, rhinestones, velour and logos, so Paris Hilton and Juicy Couture. The Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute dates McBling to roughly 2000 to 2008 and explicitly describes it as a turn away from the silver future look of the Y2K aesthetic.
  • Hip-hop: Rocawear, Baby Phat, Bape, throwback jerseys, white Air Force 1, grillz and chains. Wide, expensive, loud.
  • Pop-punk and skate: Avril Lavigne and Blink-182, studded belts, check patterns, skate shoes with fat tongues, shorts down past the knee.

Since the 2020s, “Y2K” has stood for all the fashion of the 2000s, and what is meant is mostly McBling. The hip-hop and skate sides of the era live more on cut and proportion, McBling more on glitter. Take whatever you like from all of them.

Why is Y2K back?

Fashion runs roughly in twenty-year loops. Anyone who saw the originals as a child is old enough twenty years later to buy them themselves, and anyone who missed them finds them new. Generation Z, born from 1997 on according to Pew Research, knows the early 2000s at best as a childhood memory. For them, an original Von Dutch cap is a grail.

The spark jumped across social networks in the early 2020s, in the middle of the pandemic. Second-hand platforms such as Depop grew, and thrifting became a mass pastime. After that, the catwalk followed. Miu Miu showed a mini skirt in brown cotton twill with a short grey cable-knit jumper, and the Fashion Museum in Bath named exactly that outfit “Dress of the Year 2022”.

One thing can happily stay in the 2000s: the pressure to have a certain stomach to wear low-rise jeans. The revival takes the cut and leaves the pressure out. As it should be.

Y2K vs. the 90s and grunge: the difference

The three get mixed up constantly, yet they want almost opposite things.

What they share is wide trousers and short tops, which is why the line blurs. A classic mistake: counting “Clueless” as a Y2K film. It came out in 1995. Cher Horowitz's yellow checked outfit is pure 90s and five years early.

Y2K streetwear: which T-shirts fit?

With Y2K streetwear, the shirt makes half the silhouette. For the 2001 look it either sits tight and short or boxy and wide. Anything in between looks calmer and less like 2001.

ART OF LIFE is our shirt in the look of the 2000s: Vintage White, slim fit, made of 150 GSM organic cotton, ring-spun and combed. The fabric is thin and soft and lies close to the body, just as shirts sat around 2000. A screen print on the front, the red PAIN heart as a back print, distressed hems. Under an open track jacket or with wide cargos, that is already Y2K.

DIRT MOUTH is a slim fit with short, narrow sleeves, which puts it close to the silhouette of a baby tee. Eggshell, Dirt Wash, open hems and a screen print with a metallic effect in a grillz look. Nelly rapped about exactly this tooth jewellery in “Grillz” in 2005 and hit number 1 on the US charts with it.

For the hip-hop side there is LAW OF ATTRACTION: boxy oversized, 300 GSM, with hand-painted pink edges and colour splashes. The front reads MONEY NEEDS ME with three dollar signs, in screen print. You can hardly fit more bling on cotton.

All shirts are unisex. How slim, boxy and oversized fit exactly is explained in our comparison Boxy vs. Oversized vs. Slim Fit, and you will find more close cuts in the Slim Fit T-Shirts and wide ones in the Oversized T-Shirts.

Y2K outfit: six formulas for men and women

First off: just two pieces that clearly look like 2001 already set the tone. Juicy tracksuit, Von Dutch cap, Ed Hardy shirt and butterfly clips all at once make the full Paris Hilton look, and you can wear it whenever you like. An easy start is the fit, and the logo can come after.

Y2K outfit for men

  1. Hip-hop 2002: a boxy oversized shirt like LAW OF ATTRACTION, baggy jeans in a mid wash, white low-top sneakers, trucker cap. One thin silver chain, or three.
  2. Cyber: ART OF LIFE under an open track jacket with side stripes, black cargo trousers, small sunglasses with tinted lenses.
  3. Denim on denim, but quiet: denim jacket and jeans in two clearly different washes, a white shirt underneath. Timberlake 2001, just without the cowboy hat.

Y2K outfit for women

  1. Baby tee and low-rise: DIRT MOUTH, wide jeans with a low waist, a small shoulder bag, sneakers with a chunky sole.
  2. Velour light: a velour zip jacket worn open over a tight white shirt, with straight jeans. Add the matching trousers and it becomes the full velour tracksuit, just like 2003.
  3. Going out: satin or metallic top, low-rise cargos, platform sandals, one butterfly clip. More shine makes the look more glamorous.

The formulas are not tied to a gender. In her Tommy Hilfiger ads, Aaliyah wore baggy jeans with a tube top, Avril Lavigne wore the tie in 2002, and a short slim fit shirt with wide trousers is just as Y2K on men.
