What Goes with a Black T-Shirt?
Quick answer
Monday, 7:40 am, no time: almost any pair of trousers goes with a black T-shirt, most easily blue, grey, beige and black. Navy and almost identical blacks blur with the shirt into nearly one colour. To keep it black: wash it inside out, 30 °C, no tumble dryer.
Styling a black T-shirt at a glance
- Trousers: blue jeans, grey or black jeans, beige chinos, cargos, shorts
- Easiest colours to wear with it: white, grey, beige, light blue, olive
- Navy: right next to the shirt it looks almost black
- Shoes: easiest when they match the trousers
- Jackets: overshirt, denim jacket, leather jacket, coat in grey or camel
- Jewellery: silver looks cool, gold warm, both shine on black
- Black on black: with different fabrics and shades of black, you see each piece on its own
- Office: for example with tailored trousers and a blazer on top
- Summer: a wide cut is airier than a tight one
- Care: inside out, 30 °C, no tumble dryer, dry in the shade
Quick questions
What colour trousers go with a black T-shirt?
Blue, grey, beige, white, olive and black. White and beige bring the strongest contrast, grey looks the calmest.
What shoes go with a black T-shirt?
White sneakers almost always work. Black boots go with dark trousers, and for the office there are loafers, meaning leather shoes without laces.
Can you wear a black T-shirt to the office?
Yes, if the dress code is relaxed. A shirt in a rich, deep black looks smart with tailored trousers or dark jeans and a blazer.
Is a black T-shirt too warm for summer?
In the sun, black fabric gets hotter than white. A wide cut helps, because the heat escapes with the air under the fabric.
Why does a black T-shirt fade?
Mostly through friction in the drum, bleach in the detergent, warm water and sun. In a test by the University of Leeds, shirts on a short, cool wash lost noticeably less colour.
How do you get a black T-shirt black again?
Colour that has washed out does not come back by itself, only re-dyeing with fabric dye helps. With Washed Black, meaning black that has been washed out on purpose, it is not worth it.
In detail: colours, trousers, outfits and care
“Black goes with everything” is true. Black is the darkest colour in the wardrobe. Next to light colours it stands out clearly. Next to colours that are almost black it blurs, and then the pieces look almost like one.
What colours go with a black T-shirt?
The lighter the colour next to black, the stronger the contrast. The closer it is to black, the calmer and darker the look becomes.
- White and cream: the strongest contrast. Looks fresh, best in summer.
- Grey: calm and easy. Light grey looks sporty, mid grey grown-up.
- Beige, sand and camel: warm, and softer than white. Camel is a light brown, as on classic wool coats.
- Blue: mostly as jeans. Light blue makes the look laid-back, mid blue works almost every time.
- Olive and khaki: muted greens that look like workwear. Good with boots.
- Strong colours: red, yellow or cobalt blue. Kept small, as socks or a cap, they add an accent. As trousers or a jacket, they make the look loud.
A tip for shirts with a print: take the accent colour from the design. ENERGY has a yellow exclamation mark on the front. Yellow socks or a yellow beanie pick it up. And the outfit already looks planned.
Navy next to black
Navy is a very dark blue. In the evening it looks almost the same as black, in daylight you can see the difference. If you want to separate the two colours, put something light in between, an open grey jacket for instance. Mid blue stands apart on its own.
What trousers go with a black T-shirt?
Blue jeans: light or dark?
Light blue jeans bring a lot of contrast and feel like summer. Dark blue ones are calmer. Mid blue always works. A straight leg sits in the middle, neither tight nor very wide.
Black jeans
Black shirt, black jeans: the simplest all-black look. All black means exactly that: everything is black. How to play with fabrics and shades of black is covered further down, under black on black.
Grey jeans and grey trousers
Grey is the gentle option. The contrast is smaller than with white, and the outfit looks calm. Light grey jeans look sporty. Mid-grey tailored trousers are smart enough for the office.
Beige chinos or tailored trousers
Chinos are light cotton trousers with a straight leg. In beige with a black shirt, they are the classic for warm days. The contrast is strong, but softer than with white.
Cargo trousers
Cargo trousers have large pockets on the sides of the thighs. They work well in olive, beige or black. Because they have a lot of fabric, a shirt of normal length shows more of the trousers. A very long one makes the whole look longer and wider. Wearing a wide shirt with wide trousers is covered in How to Wear an Oversized T-Shirt.
Shorts
In summer, shorts in beige, grey or light denim work, roughly to the knee. Black with black works too, but gets warm in the sun.
White trousers
White trousers bring the hardest contrast. It looks clean and a little elegant. Just mind the coffee.
What shoes go with a black T-shirt?
A simple tip: match the shoes to the trousers. The trousers sit right above them, the shirt is far away.
- White sneakers: go with blue, grey, beige and black. They bring something light in at the bottom.
- Black sneakers: with black or grey trousers, when everything should stay calm.
- Boots: with jeans and cargos. Chelsea boots are ankle boots with an elastic panel on the side and no laces at all.
- Loafers: leather shoes you slip into. Good with tailored trousers and chinos.
- Sandals: with shorts and light trousers in summer.
One more tip, on socks: with black trousers and black shoes, you wear black socks. The leg then looks longer, because no light gap appears at the ankle. White sports socks, on the other hand, add a light spot, with sneakers and shorts for example.
What do you wear over a black T-shirt?
Under a jacket, the black shirt is the quiet part. So the jacket can bring some colour.
- Overshirt: a shirt in thick fabric that you wear open like a light jacket. In olive, grey or check.
- Denim jacket: in mid blue, the easiest contrast.
- Leather jacket: black over a black shirt has a rock feel. With lighter trousers you get contrast, with black trousers it becomes a completely dark look.
- Coat: in grey or camel. Underneath, the black shirt looks clean and grown-up.
- Cardigan: chunky knit in grey or cream for cold days.
With wide shirts, the jacket needs enough room at the shoulder. Otherwise the fabric gets squashed and bunches up.
What jewellery goes with a black T-shirt?
Jewellery shows up especially well on black. A silver chain that almost disappears on white fabric shines on black.
- Silver: cool, with a rock edge. Good with Washed Black, jeans and a leather jacket.
- Gold: warm and a little more elegant. Good with beige and camel.
- Several chains: Two or three fine chains in one metal look calm, silver and gold mixed looks livelier.
- With printed shirts: If the chain ends above the design, the image stays clear. A longer chain hangs right in the middle of it.
Styling a black T-shirt: outfits for men
All our shirts are unisex. So you can swap the formulas for men and women.
- Ready in no time: SHOTTIE in black, light blue straight jeans, white sneakers, white socks. Lots of contrast, zero effort.
- Workwear: SHOTTIE, olive cargo trousers, brown boots. Workwear means work clothes worn as a style.
- Two blacks: ENERGY in Washed Black, deep black jeans, black Chelsea boots, a silver chain. The difference between the two blacks makes the look.
- Office with a relaxed dress code: a black shirt with little print, mid-grey tailored trousers, loafers, a dark grey blazer.
- Summer: ENERGY, knee-length beige shorts, white sneakers, a yellow cap to match the exclamation mark.
SHOTTIE is oversized, so cut wide, at 300 GSM. GSM means grams per square metre of fabric, and 300 is heavy. ENERGY is 250 GSM with a relaxed fit: loose, but less wide. That is why it also works with slimmer jeans.
Styling a black T-shirt: outfits for women
- With mom jeans: SHOTTIE, mid blue mom jeans, white sneakers. Mom jeans have a high waistband and a loose leg. Tuck a piece of the shirt into the waistband at the front, and the waist shows.
- Long skirt: SHOTTIE with a long skirt in cream or white, plus flat sandals or ballet flats. Dark on top, light below, which feels airy.
- Office: a plain black shirt, wide grey high-waisted tailored trousers, loafers, a camel blazer.
- With leather: ENERGY, black leather trousers or a leather skirt, a gold chain, heeled boots. Shiny leather meets matt, washed-out cotton.
- Summer: SHOTTIE, denim shorts, sandals, sunglasses. Let the shirt hang loose over the shorts, and air gets in.
Black on black: ideas for an all-black outfit
Head to toe in black looks cohesive and strong. With three ideas, the individual pieces show more clearly.
Different fabrics
Mix matt and shiny, smooth and rough. Cotton is matt, leather has a slight shine, denim has texture, knitwear is rough. One shiny piece adds an accent, with more shine the look gets more glamorous.
Two blacks, on purpose
Not every black is the same. Deep black is rich and dark, as on SHOTTIE. Washed Black is a black that has been washed out on purpose. It looks softer and slightly grey, like a favourite shirt after many summers. ENERGY is one of those Washed Black shirts.
Matching blacks look all of a piece. Clearly different ones, Washed Black with deep black jeans for example, show each piece on its own. With almost identical shades, the small difference only shows in bright light. Check it at the window in daylight. Under hallway lighting, every black looks the same.
How washes like these are made is explained in our article on vintage wash. You’ll find both shades under Black T-Shirts.
One light spot
A small light detail gives the eye something to hold on to, like a white sneaker sole or a silver chain.
Is a black T-shirt too hot in summer?
Black absorbs more sunlight than white, that much is true. Even so, Bedouins, the nomads of the desert, often wear black robes. Why? In 1980 the answer appeared in the scientific journal Nature. For the test, a man stood in the desert sun, sometimes in a black robe, sometimes in a white one.
The black robe absorbed two and a half times as much solar radiation. On the outside it was up to 6 °C hotter. None of that reached the skin, though. Under the loose fabric, warm air rose upwards. Cooler air flowed in from below, like in a small chimney.
A T-shirt is not a desert robe. The principle still applies: in summer, wide is airier than tight. A tight shirt sticks to the skin, a wide one lets air through.
Why does a black T-shirt fade?
A black shirt does not turn grey overnight. It happens slowly, wash by wash. These five things are to blame:
- Friction: In the drum, the pieces rub against each other. The fibres roughen, and the fabric takes on a grey haze.
- Bleach: Heavy-duty powder detergent contains bleach. According to the Verbraucherzentrale (German consumer advice service), bleach fades colours too.
- Warm, long washes: A long programme at 40 °C costs more colour than a short, cool one.
- Sun: Direct sunlight bleaches black. For drying, it belongs in the shade.
- Too much detergent: Residue stays in the fabric and makes it look greyish.
Why friction makes such a difference has to do with the dye. The most widely used dyes for cotton are sulphur dyes. They come mainly in black, brown and dark blue. They barely dissolve in water, which is why they stand up well to washing. Rubbing is harder on them. That is why turning the shirt inside out helps so much.
What the research shows
In 2020, the University of Leeds in England tested how wash programmes affect colour. The partner was the detergent maker Procter & Gamble. Twelve dark and eight brightly coloured T-shirts were washed, 16 times each. One programme ran for 30 minutes at 25 °C, the other for 85 minutes at 40 °C.
The result: after the short, cool programme, the shirts had lost noticeably less colour. Up to 74 per cent less dye was washed out. That is what it says in the university’s press release.
In 2025, Stiftung Warentest (Germany’s consumer-testing foundation) also reported on a test from France. There, 22 black cotton shirts were tested and washed 15 times. The best two kept almost all of their colour. Another shirt, by contrast, lost both size and colour. So care is one half. The other is how well the shirt was dyed.
How to keep your black T-shirt black
Our rule for every shirt: inside out, 30 °C, no tumble dryer. Plus a few simple steps.
- Turn it inside out, because then the inside rubs against the drum and the colour stays on the outside.
- 30 °C and a short programme, because warm, long washing cost more colour in the Leeds test.
- Use colour or delicates detergent, because it contains no bleach. According to the Verbraucherzentrale, a special detergent for black is not needed.
- Dose precisely, because too much detergent leaves grey residue.
- Wash only with dark things, without towels, because towels shed lint and the lint clings to black.
- No tumble dryer, because the heat damages the fibres and the colour.
- Dry it in the shade, because the sun bleaches black.
- Wash it less often, because every wash costs a little colour. After an evening out, airing it overnight is often enough.
The shirt still gets clean: according to the Umweltbundesamt (German Environment Agency), normally soiled coloureds usually come clean at just 20 to 30 °C. The same goes for Washed Black like ENERGY. Everything on detergent, drying and ironing is in How to Wash a T-Shirt Properly.
Three common mishaps with a black T-shirt
- White deodorant streaks. Let the deodorant dry first, then put the shirt on. On black, every streak shows.
- A pale haze after washing. That is often detergent residue. Use less and rinse the shirt once in clean water.
- Lint everywhere. Towels in a separate load, a lint roller by the coat rack.
And Monday at 7:40 am? SHOTTIE, light blue jeans, white sneakers. Done before the coffee has finished brewing.
