What Goes with a Grey T-Shirt?

What Goes with a Grey T-Shirt?

Quick answer

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg wore a grey T-shirt almost every day for years, so he wouldn’t have to think about it in the morning. That works because grey goes with almost everything: black, white, denim blue, beige and even red or yellow. A simple tip: light grey with dark trousers, dark grey with light ones. One piece in a bold colour sets an accent, more colour makes the look more colourful.

Styling a grey T-shirt at a glance

  • Light grey: with dark trousers, such as black or dark blue jeans
  • Dark grey: with light trousers, such as beige, white or light jeans
  • Safest trousers: straight jeans in black or blue
  • Colour: one bold piece sets an accent, for example a cap, socks or a jacket, more colour makes it more colourful
  • Grey on grey: if one piece is clearly lighter or darker, you see both on their own, the same grey reads as one block
  • Shoes: white sneakers keep it fresh, black boots make it harder
  • Sweat: shows most on light, smooth grey
  • What helps: a darker grey, stripes or blotchy washes, a loose cut

Quick questions

Which trousers go with a grey T-shirt?

The safest choice is a pair of straight jeans in black or dark blue. After that come beige chinos, white jeans and black tailored trousers. Chinos are trousers made of firm, smooth cotton.

Does beige go with grey?

Yes. Beige makes grey warmer and softer. With mid or dark grey you get more contrast. Next to light grey, the look turns very light and soft.

Can you wear grey and black together?

Yes, it’s the easiest combination there is. Light grey with black gives a strong contrast. Dark grey with black looks calm and dark.

Why does sweat show so clearly on grey T-shirts?

Wet fabric reflects less light, so it looks darker. On light and mid grey, that dark patch is especially noticeable. On white, very dark colours or patterns you see it much less.

Can I wash a grey T-shirt with black clothes?

A dark grey shirt, yes. A light grey one is better off with light things. New black clothes can still give off dye in the first few washes.

In detail: shades of grey, trousers, colours and outfits

Zuckerberg explained why at his first public Q&A in November 2014. He said he wanted to make as few decisions as possible, apart from how to make Facebook better. Then, in January 2016, he showed his wardrobe: nothing but grey T-shirts and hoodies on hangers.

So grey goes with almost anything. Still, a few things change a lot about how it comes across.

Why does grey go with almost everything?

Together with black and white, grey is one of the achromatic colours. That means grey has no hue of its own, only a brightness. That’s why it never clashes with another colour.

With grey, what counts most is how light or dark it is. With a light grey shirt, dark trousers give contrast. A dark grey shirt looks fresh with light trousers. If shirt and trousers are equally light, everything becomes one calm block of grey.

Which grey do you have? Four shades of grey compared

T-shirts come in four kinds of grey, and each one comes across differently.

Light heather grey: the sports grey

Heather, also called marl, means the yarn is blended from fibres in different colours. Blend black and white fibres and you get heather grey. Up close, the fabric therefore looks slightly speckled.

It’s the classic grey of sports shirts and joggers. It looks best with dark jeans, black or navy. The catch: sweat shows especially clearly on heather grey. More on that below.

Charcoal: almost black

Charcoal is a very dark grey. It looks calmer and more grown-up than light grey. It looks good with light trousers, so beige, white or light jeans.

It works with black too, and then the look turns completely dark. A light piece such as white sneakers brings some light into it.

Concrete grey: the all-rounder

A mid grey is neither light nor dark. That’s why it goes with most trousers: black, blue, beige or olive green. Our PRICE OF FAME has a grey like this. The colour is called Faded Concrete, a washed-out concrete grey, with pale bleach splatters.

Washed vintage grey

These shirts were washed, bleached or abraded after sewing. So the grey is uneven and often lighter at the edges and seams. It looks like a band shirt that is already ten years old. How washes like these are made is explained in our guide What Does Washed Mean on T-Shirts?

Ours are LIKE KURT, YOKO ONO and FUGITIVE. LIKE KURT is sun faded, bleached as if after many summers in the sun. YOKO ONO has a marble wash with a cloudy pattern. FUGITIVE has bleached stripes in grey and black. Vintage grey looks rough and goes best with black jeans, boots and a leather jacket.

You’ll find all four of our grey shirts under Grey T-Shirts.

Warm or cool? The paper test

Some greys have a slight bluish tint. These are called cool. Others lean slightly towards brown, and those are warm. Lay your shirt next to a white sheet of paper and you’ll see it straight away.

Cool grey goes well with black, white and blue. Warm grey goes better with beige, brown and olive green. If you wear a warm and a cool grey right on top of each other, the difference shows: one looks browner, the other bluer.

Which trousers go with a grey T-shirt?

These six kinds of trousers are a safe bet.

  1. Black jeans: go with every grey, because the black makes the shirt look lighter. The best choice if you’d rather not think about it.
  2. Dark blue jeans: especially good with light grey, because the deep blue gives the pale grey some colour.
  3. Light jeans: with dark grey for plenty of contrast. Light grey and light blue together look soft and light.
  4. Beige chinos or cargos: cargos are trousers with big side pockets. Beige warms up the grey and goes best with concrete grey or charcoal.
  5. Olive green cargos: look rugged, a little military. They go well with vintage grey, because both colours already look worn.
  6. White jeans or linen trousers: for summer. With mid and dark grey you get contrast, with light grey the look turns very light.

And grey trousers? They come further down, under tone on tone.

Wide shirts and trousers

Our grey shirts are all wide. For us, oversized means wide and normal length, boxy means wide and a little shorter. Straight or wide trousers carry the wide shape on downwards. Very slim trousers set a contrast: wide on top, narrow below.

With boxy shirts such as PRICE OF FAME and FUGITIVE, high-waisted trousers work well. The shorter shirt then ends roughly at the waistband. More on proportions in How to Wear an Oversized T-Shirt.

Which colours go with grey?

Grey and black

The easiest combination. Light grey with black looks crisp. With dark grey and black, white sneakers bring light into the outfit.

Grey and white

Fresh and clean, good for summer. White sneakers with a grey shirt always work. Light grey with white trousers looks very light and soft. A dark jacket adds contrast.

Grey and beige or brown

Warm and soft. Grey shirt, beige trousers, brown leather shoes: that looks like autumn, even in May. It works best with a warm grey.

Grey and blue

Grey and denim blue go together almost every time. Navy with grey looks neat. Light blue with light grey looks gentle and light, and a dark piece adds contrast.

Grey and bold colours

Next to grey, any bold colour glows brighter, because grey brings no colour of its own. A bold colour on a small area sets an accent, such as a red cap, yellow socks or green sneakers.

With two bold colours, both draw the eye, and the outfit gets more colourful and louder. If your shirt has a coloured print, you can pick that colour up again in your socks or cap.

Grey T-shirt tone on tone: grey with grey

Tone on tone means everything in one colour, just in different shades. With grey, that’s easy. Three ideas:

  1. Mix light and dark: if shirt and trousers are clearly different in lightness, you see both pieces on their own. The same grey on top and bottom reads as one block.
  2. Mix fabrics: jersey (the fabric T-shirts are made of), denim, knit or wool all reflect light differently. That’s why you see the pieces on their own, even in a similar colour.
  3. One contrast: white sneakers, black boots or a silver chain. That’s where the eye lands.

More shades of grey make the look more layered. One to copy: LIKE KURT, wide light grey joggers, grey sneakers, a black cap.

Which shoes go with a grey T-shirt?

  • White sneakers: go with every grey and every pair of trousers, because white makes the outfit look fresh.
  • Black boots: with black jeans and vintage grey, good in autumn.
  • Grey sneakers: for tone-on-tone looks. Ideally in suede, because the rough surface looks different from the smooth shirt.
  • Brown leather shoes or boots: with beige and olive green, because brown picks up the warm tones.
  • Colourful sneakers: stand out most when they are the only coloured piece in the outfit.

As for socks, white ones go well with sneakers and black ones with boots. Colourful ones add a splash of colour when everything else is grey.

What can I wear over a grey T-shirt?

  • Denim jacket: blue and grey always go together, and the jacket can be washed out.
  • Black leather jacket: gives the soft grey a hard edge, best with vintage grey.
  • Checked shirt, worn open: the grey calms down all the colours in the check.
  • Overshirt: a thick shirt you wear like a light jacket, nice in olive or brown.
  • Long sleeve underneath: a thin long-sleeved shirt in white or black, so the short-sleeved shirt still works in October.

Styling a grey T-shirt: outfits for men

All our shirts are unisex, so you can swap the outfits here and in the women’s section.

  1. With a leather jacket: LIKE KURT, straight black jeans, black boots, an open black leather jacket. The wash and the bleach stains already give the eye plenty to look at.
  2. Summer in the city: PRICE OF FAME, high-waisted beige cargos, white sneakers, a cobalt blue cap. The blue is the only bold colour.
  3. Stripes instead of a print: FUGITIVE, wide black trousers, white sneakers, white socks. The stripes are the pattern, the rest stays simple. The white PAIN heart on the front picks up the sneakers and socks.
  4. Office with a relaxed dress code: a plain dark grey shirt, a navy blazer, beige tailored trousers, brown leather shoes. It looks more relaxed than a collared shirt and still smart.

Styling a grey T-shirt: outfits for women

  1. A skirt instead of jeans: FUGITIVE with a red, calf-length skirt in satin, a shiny, flowing fabric. Add black ballet flats. The skirt brings the colour, the shirt stays calm.
  2. Long, with a waist: YOKO ONO is extra long. Tuck a hand’s width of it into wide black tailored trousers at the front, and a waist appears. Add flat leather loafers.
  3. Mom jeans: LIKE KURT with light blue mom jeans, meaning jeans with a high waist and a loose, straight leg. Over it an open cardigan in burgundy, plus white sneakers.
  4. Tone on tone: PRICE OF FAME, wide light grey joggers, grey sneakers, big silver earrings. The silver sets the contrast to the grey.

Sweat stains on a grey T-shirt: why they show and what helps

Now for the honest part. According to Men's Health, sweat stains show especially clearly on heather grey, light blue and other mid tones.

Why does sweat show so clearly on grey?

Water is transparent. And yet fabric gets darker when it’s wet. The science magazine BBC Science Focus explains it like this: a thin film of water sits on wet fabric. It redirects the light, and in the end less light reaches your eye.

Black can hardly get any darker, although pale rings of salt or deodorant sometimes show on it instead. On grey, by contrast, you get a clear dark patch. It’s worst under the arms. There the arm rests against the body, hardly any air gets in, and the sweat dries slowly.

Some people actually like that. A reporter told MEL Magazine that his workouts feel more successful in a grey shirt. After all, you see the sweat straight away.

What helps against sweat stains on grey?

  1. Choose a darker grey: on charcoal, damp shows less, because the difference between wet and dry is smaller.
  2. Patterns and washes: sweat shows less on patterned fabrics. Stripes or blotchy washes have a similar effect, because the dark patch gets lost in the pattern.
  3. A loose cut: a wide shirt doesn’t stick to the armpit. More air gets in, and the sweat dries faster.
  4. Antiperspirant in the evening: a normal deodorant only helps against the smell. An antiperspirant makes you sweat less. It works best when you put it on dry skin in the evening.
  5. A thin vest: it soaks up the sweat before it reaches the shirt. Pick one with a deep neckline, so nothing peeks out at the collar.

Does a thick shirt help against sweat stains?

Only partly. We’ll say that honestly, even though our grey shirts are heavy. They are 300 GSM, meaning 300 grams of fabric per square metre. Fabric this thick isn’t see-through and doesn’t cling to the skin.

But it doesn’t stop the dark patch. Cotton soaks up sweat, even when it is thick. If you sweat a lot, stripes, a blotchy wash or a darker grey are the better choice.

After a sweaty day, the shirt goes in the wash before long. How to do that gently is covered in our guide How to Wash a T-Shirt Properly.

Four things that change a grey outfit

  1. The same grey on top and bottom. Then shirt and trousers become one calm block of grey.
  2. Two bold colours with it. The outfit gets more colourful and louder, with one colour it stays calmer.
  3. Mixing warm and cool grey. Then the difference shows. With the paper test you can see beforehand which grey you have.
  4. Light grey on the hottest day of the year. At 32 °C in the shade, stripes or a darker grey are the better pick, because sweat shows less on them.

Zuckerberg answered the question of what to wear in the morning once, then filled a whole wardrobe with the answer. For a start: a grey shirt and black jeans.
