How to Wear an Oversized T-Shirt?
Quick answer
Saturday on the Warschauer Brücke in Berlin: two guys in almost the same black oversized shirt. And yet the two looks are completely different. Here is one way to wear an oversized T-shirt: either the shirt stays the only wide piece and the trousers fall straight, or you go wide on wide and, if you like, add structure with a French tuck, shoes with some mass and trousers in a similarly heavy fabric. An oversized cut usually ends roughly at the crotch, the sleeves above the elbow. Heavy fabric hangs rather than clings.
Styling an oversized T-shirt at a glance
- One wide piece: wide shirt, straight trousers
- Hem: between the fly and the crotch the legs look longer, below the bum shorter
- Sleeves: between mid upper arm and just above the elbow
- Wide on wide: always an option, a tuck or belt, straight trousers and shoes with some mass add structure
- French tuck: a hand’s width of hem at the front, three to five centimetres behind the waistband
- Fabric: at 300 GSM, tuck and sleeve cuff hold all day
- Layering: every layer on top a touch wider than the one beneath
- Loud pieces: print and wash already set an accent, more makes the look louder
Quick questions
Can you tuck an oversized T-shirt into your trousers?
Yes, and then the waist shows. The easiest way is the French tuck, where only a piece of hem at the front goes into the waistband. Tucking all the way in only works with trousers that have a high, wide waistband.
Which trousers go with an oversized T-shirt?
A straight pair of jeans or straight-leg trousers is an easy start. Wide trousers work just as well, and a tuck, sturdy shoes and a shorter hem give the look more structure.
Does an oversized T-shirt suit shorter people too?
Yes, of course. If you want your legs to look longer, a tuck that lifts the hemline, bare ankles and only one wide piece help. With long cuts such as YOKO ONO, it is worth a look at the size chart first.
Is a 300 GSM shirt too warm in summer?
It is warmer than a thin basic, but the wide cut lets air reach the body. On very hot days a lighter fabric is more comfortable. The rest of the year, the heavy shirt hangs better.
In detail: proportions, tucks and outfits
The difference on the bridge sat in the spot where the hem stops, and in two fingers of fabric that were tucked into the waistband at the front, or weren’t. What oversized actually means and which size to take is covered in our article on the oversized fit. Here, it’s about how to wear it.
A starting point: one wide piece and a clear hemline
Anyone who has ever stood in a skate shop knows the simplest formula: wide on top, straight below. Jerry Lorenzo built a whole brand out of it. GQ described the typical Fear of God proportion in 2020 as oversized on top, narrow below, often layered short over long. A counterweight shows that the width is intentional. Skinny jeans do work, but under a wide shirt the contrast between wide on top and tight below gets very strong. A straight pair of jeans or straight-leg trousers looks calmer, because it carries the width of the shoulders on downwards instead of cutting it off at the hip.
Where hem and sleeves end
The hemline changes the most. If it ends between the end of the fly and the crotch, the legs look longer. If it slips below the bum, the legs immediately look shorter, because the eye lets them start only where the fabric stops. Splitting into thirds helps as a guide: torso roughly one third, legs two thirds. An oversized shirt pushes that line down, a tuck lifts it back up.
The sleeves end between mid upper arm and just above the elbow. If they hang lower, the shirt looks even wider. At 300 GSM you can fold them over once, wide, because the heavy fabric holds the cuff. A thin shirt slides back down the first time you reach for your travel card.
Wide on wide: how to wear oversized with wide trousers
Many guides forbid it. The street hasn’t listened for thirty years. In Larry Clark’s 1995 film “Kids”, the skater Casper wears an Independent shirt with extremely wide trousers and flat Converse, and Dazed counts baggy jeans that hang so low the boxer shorts show among the film’s style signals. Worn completely loose, it is a look of its own. If you want more structure, there are a few places to adjust:
- The hem stays up. If the shirt ends at the hip or the crotch, the waist shows. Halfway down the thigh, shirt and trousers merge into one block.
- The waist gets marked. A French tuck or a visible belt shows the eye a spot where the body changes direction.
- The trousers fall straight. Wide, straight jeans, carpenter jeans or pleated trousers. With balloon trousers with a tight cuff, all the width sits in the middle, which looks even more voluminous.
- The fabrics weigh about the same. A heavy shirt keeps up with heavy denim or canvas. A light shirt over solid trousers looks soft and flowing instead.
- The shoes carry weight. Nike Air Force 1, New Balance with a thick sole, Salomon XT-6 or Dr. Martens 1460, the boot that has that name because it came out on 1 April 1960. Narrow shoes almost disappear under wide trousers.
- One colour holds everything together. Grey on grey, black on washed black, because tone on tone makes the silhouette read as a single shape. The shoes provide the contrast.
Tucking in an oversized shirt: French tuck, half tuck, full tuck
Tan France didn’t invent the French tuck. He has worn it, by his own account, for around 20 years, and he found the name in an article online when the producers of “Queer Eye” wanted to highlight the technique on the show. He still made it famous: after season two launched on Netflix in 2018, thousands of people tagged him in photos of their own French tuck within five days. For anyone styling an oversized shirt there is no better tool, because the tuck lifts the hemline without making the shirt shorter.
French tuck: front only
- Put the shirt on, trousers done up, belt left open.
- Take a piece of hem at the centre front, about as wide as your hand, and push it three to five centimetres deep behind the waistband.
- Pull the fabric back out a little until it falls loosely over the waistband and half covers the button.
- Do up the belt. Sides and back stay out.
At 300 GSM the tuck holds all day, because the heavy fabric keeps its fold. Thin shirts slip back out after the first flight of stairs. Crooked looks relaxed, a French tuck that looks as if it was drawn with a ruler looks very neat.
Half tuck: one side
Some already call the French tuck by that name. We mean the sideways variant: the hem is tucked into the waistband over one hip only, and the other side hangs free. The diagonal line breaks up the box that an oversized shirt otherwise forms, and it suits high-waisted jeans and wide trousers.
Full tuck: all the way in, then loosen
The whole shirt goes into the trousers, then you pull it back out two or three centimetres all the way round. That only works with a high waistband and room at the hip, so with pleated trousers or wide high-waisted jeans. In low-slung, tight jeans, heavy cotton forms a bulge at the hips that no belt hides.
Knot: flatter with a hair tie
With heavy fabric, a side knot gets as thick as a small fist. A flatter way: gather the hem at the side from the inside, tie it off with a hair tie, fold the end inwards. From the outside it looks like a knot, just without the bump.
Combining an oversized T-shirt: outfits for men
All our shirts are unisex, so the formulas here and in the women’s section can be swapped.
- Grunge, tidied up: LIKE KURT in grey with a sun-faded wash, bleached stains and screen print on the front, over a thin black long sleeve, straight black jeans, Dr. Martens 1460. In the cold, an open flannel shirt over the top. Jewellery is optional here, stains and distressed hems already say a lot.
- Wide on wide: SHOTTIE in black, wide carpenter jeans in washed black, French tuck, white Air Force 1, black cap. Tone on tone, with the shoes as the only contrast. The distressed hem stays visible at the sides, because only the front is tucked.
- Workwear: ANTAGONIST in Vintage White with pink lettering and pink paint splashes, with beige work trousers like the Dickies 874, black Vans Old Skool, white socks. Pink is the only strong colour in the whole outfit, which is why it works.
- Dressed up: SHOTTIE or LIKE KURT in a full tuck into wide grey wool pleated trousers, slim leather belt, loafers. A graphic tee in suit trousers looks grown-up and still relaxed.
Combining an oversized T-shirt: outfits for women
In the nineties, Princess Diana wore oversized sweatshirts with cycling shorts and sneakers on her way out of the gym, in 1995 for example a Virgin Atlantic sweatshirt over orange cycling shorts outside the Chelsea Harbour Club in London. The paparazzi photos from back then are still among the best templates for an oversized shirt.
- Cycling shorts and sports socks: ANTAGONIST worn loose over black cycling shorts, white tennis socks, chunky-soled sneakers. The shirt can be longer here, the tight shorts provide the counterweight. If a hand’s width of cycling shorts shows under the hem, the shorts stay visible.
- Satin skirt: LIKE KURT with a satin midi skirt in black or champagne, half tuck on one side, plus ballet flats or, in autumn, knee-high boots. The look lives off the clash, with bleached, washed-out cotton meeting shiny fabric.
- Wide on wide with a belt: SHOTTIE in a full tuck into wide high-waisted pleated trousers, broad leather belt, loafers. The ideas from above help here too, above all the shoe with presence.
- Long as a dress: YOKO ONO is extra long and sewn in a kimono cut: the sleeve is cut in one piece with the body, without a shoulder seam, which is why the shirt falls softly from the neck down. In Vintage Grey with a marble wash, you wear it over cycling shorts with knee-high boots, or with a slim belt at the waist. The contrast embroidery sits on the back, and here the back is the show side. How far down it reaches on you is revealed by the size chart on the product page.
Styling an oversize shirt through the year: long sleeve, overshirt, cardigan
Spring and summer
On its own, with shorts that end roughly at the knee. Short shorts almost vanish under an oversized shirt, and then you mostly see shirt and legs. An open bowling shirt or Hawaiian shirt goes over it well, as long as it is at least as wide through the shoulders as the T-shirt.
Transition: shirt over long sleeve
A thin long sleeve under a short-sleeved shirt belonged to skaters and grunge in the nineties, and it rescues any summer shirt into October. Slim and thin is easiest, because a thick sleeve bunches up under the short one. And it lives off contrast: a white long sleeve under SHOTTIE, a black one under ANTAGONIST, preferably in waffle knit, because the texture gives the wrist something to look at.
Autumn and winter: under overshirt, jacket and cardigan
A tip for layering: every layer on top is a touch wider than the one beneath. An oversized shirt has a dropped shoulder, and in a slim-cut jacket that presses against the sleeve seam until the upper arm bulges. A loose-cut overshirt, a boxy denim jacket or a bomber almost always fits. If the hem shows three or four fingers’ width below, it becomes part of the look. A centimetre of shirt under the jacket hardly shows.
Probably the most famous cardigan in rock history is green. Kurt Cobain wore it on 18 November 1993, when Nirvana recorded their “MTV Unplugged” at Sony Music Studios in New York. A chunky cardigan over a grey shirt like LIKE KURT is still the easiest grunge look for winter. And YOKO ONO works well under a long coat, because without a shoulder seam nothing adds bulk. There the extra length disappears, under a short jacket it shows.
Why 300 GSM makes the difference when styling
GSM says how much a square metre of fabric weighs, and everything about it is in our GSM guide. When styling, you notice the number in three places.
- Drape: Heavy jersey pulls down from the shoulder in straight lines under its own weight. The shirt therefore has a shape, while a light one flaps against your stomach with every gust of wind.
- Distance: The dense fabric keeps its distance from the body, so stomach and vest don’t show through.
- Hold: French tuck and sleeve cuff stay where you put them.
Our ART OF LIFE is 150 GSM, exactly half, and as a slim fit it sits close to the body. Such light fabric suits that well. In a wide cut it would fall soft and floaty.
The weight has a price: the knot gets thick, and on a 32 °C day in August a lighter shirt is more pleasant. LIKE KURT, ANTAGONIST, SHOTTIE and YOKO ONO are all 300 GSM. You’ll find them in the Oversized T-Shirts collection.
Four things that change an oversize T-shirt look
- Two sizes up instead of an oversized cut. On a normal shirt, every measurement grows when you size up, neckline and length included. The collar gapes, the shoulder seam slides towards the elbow, the hem hangs halfway down the thigh.
- Thin fabric. Light jersey clings in a wide cut, and the collar quickly stretches into a wavy “bacon neck”.
- Wide on wide with no anchor. Hem halfway down the thigh, no tuck, narrow shoes under long trousers: then the whole outfit flows without structure, a very loose look.
- A lot going on. Our shirts already bring plenty of detail with screen print, wash and distressed hems. Add patterned trousers and three chains, and the look gets fuller and louder. A quiet rest or the full works, both are fine.
And the two on the Warschauer Brücke? Same size, almost the same shirt. One had tucked it two fingers wide into his jeans at the front, and his hem ended at the hip. On the other, it hung down to the thighs. Two fingers of fabric, two completely different looks.
