What Is the Difference Between Boxy, Oversized and Slim Fit?

What Is the Difference Between Boxy, Oversized and Slim Fit?

Quick answer

The three cuts differ mainly in width and length: slim fit sits close to the body, oversized gets wider and keeps the full length, boxy gets wider and gives up length in return. Laid flat, a boxy shirt looks like a box, and that is exactly where the name comes from. Which cut suits you is more often down to your trousers than to the mirror.

Quick questions

What does boxy fit mean?

Boxy means box-shaped. A boxy fit T-shirt is wide and cut straight, with no waist, and shorter than a normal shirt. Laid flat, it edges towards a square.

What is the difference between boxy and oversized?

Both are wide. Oversized keeps the full length and reaches over the waistband, boxy is shorter and ends roughly at the belt.

Should you size up in a boxy T-shirt?

Usually not, because the width is already in the cut. One size up also makes the shirt longer, and that extra length is what takes the box shape away.

What is relaxed fit?

Looser than regular, less wide than oversized. The shirt has more room at the chest and stomach without looking big. Our ENERGY is cut this way.

Boxy vs. Oversized vs. Slim Fit: the difference at a glance

  • Width: slim fit leaves little room at the chest and stomach. Oversized and boxy are both clearly wider than a normal shirt.
  • Length: slim and oversized usually have the full length, and an oversized shirt reaches over the waistband to about halfway down your backside. Boxy ends around the belt, boxy cropped a little above it.
  • Shape, laid flat: slim is a tall, narrow rectangle, oversized a tall, wide one, boxy edges towards a square.
  • Shoulder seam: on slim, it sits right on the shoulder bone. On oversized, it lies a few centimetres lower, on the upper arm. On boxy, it also slips past the bone, so the shoulder line looks wide and straight.
  • Sleeves: slim hugs the upper arm and ends about halfway down it. Oversized is wide and ends just above the elbow. Boxy is wide and cut straight, and the opening stands away from the arm.
  • Fabric: slim gets by with light jersey, 150 and 180 GSM on ours. Oversized and boxy need weight, 300 GSM on ours, because thin fabric collapses in on itself with that much width.

Between these poles sits relaxed: looser than a normal shirt, with more room at the chest and stomach, but without the drama of oversized.

In detail: origins, numbers, body shape

In 1951, Marlon Brando wore a white T-shirt in “A Streetcar Named Desire”, wet and torn, and turned an undershirt into a film still. Today three cuts hang side by side in the shops, and only one of them still sits as close to the body as an undershirt.

What does boxy fit mean? A shirt shaped like a box

Boxy means box-shaped. The English word box and the German Büchse (a tin or canister) share the same root: the Greek pyxis, a small container made of boxwood. Boxy shirt, boxy tee and boxy fit T-shirt all mean the same piece, the shops just spell it differently.

What it describes is a shirt with straight sides, no waist, a wide shoulder line and a length that comes closer to the width than on a normal shirt. The shoulder seam slips a little past the bone, the sleeves are wide and fall straight, and the hem ends roughly at the belt. From the front, the silhouette looks as if it had been drawn with a ruler.

Boxy cropped is the same shape, only shorter. A shirt like that ends above the waistband and, measured flat, can be almost as wide as it is long.

Boxy vs. Oversized: the difference is in the length

The two often get mixed up, partly because brands use the terms differently. Represent describes its Initial Boxy T-Shirt as super oversized and boxy cropped at once. For shopping, one sentence is enough: oversized gets wider and keeps the length, boxy gets wider and gives up length.

On the body, it looks like this. An oversized T-shirt falls softly from the dropped shoulder, covers the waistband and ends somewhere between the hip bone and halfway down your backside. The silhouette is a long rectangle with soft corners. A boxy shirt has a similar amount of width but stops at the belt. Because there is less fabric below, the eye reads the width more strongly, and the shoulders look squarer.

Oversized lengthens the torso, boxy shortens it. Either can be exactly the effect you want.

How the shoulder, collar and sleeves should sit on an oversized shirt is covered in our oversized guide.

Slim fit: the oldest of the three cuts

Tight came first. In 1913, the US Navy issued the T-shirt as an undershirt. Two films made it famous: Brando in “A Streetcar Named Desire” in 1951, James Dean in “Rebel Without a Cause” in 1955. In both films it is a white undershirt, and an undershirt sits close to the body, because that is what it was made for. Wear slim fit today and you are basically wearing the fifties.

A slim fit T-shirt follows the body without clinging. The shoulder seam sits right on the bone, the sleeve hugs the upper arm, and the sides taper slightly towards the waist. Narrower than regular, but not skin-tight.

Cotton jersey without elastane only stretches moderately. If you are between two sizes, take the bigger one. You can spot a slim shirt that is too tight by the diagonal pull lines running from the armpit across the chest.

Heavy fabric does little here, because on a slim fit the light jersey is meant to lie against the body. Why wide cuts need weight is explained in our GSM guide.

Where does the boxy fit come from? The tube, Paris, Manchester

Straight sides: when a shirt comes from a tube

The straight side is older than any trend. Jersey is made on circular knitting machines, and a shirt cut straight from the knitted tube needs no side seam. But it can’t get narrower at the waist either, because a tube has the same circumference all the way round. Merz b. Schwanen, founded in 1911 by Balthasar Merz in the Swabian Jura (southern Germany), knits its signature white shirts on old loopwheel machines, without side seams. At the other end of the price scale, the Gildan 5000 also has a body without side seams, according to its spec sheet. For a waist, a shirt needs a seam.

Paris, 1981: Japan brings the volume

In 1981, two designers from Tokyo showed Paris that clothes don’t have to trace the body. Yohji Yamamoto arrived with wide, often oversized cuts, almost entirely in black. Rei Kawakubo, who had founded Comme des Garçons in Tokyo in 1969, made her Paris debut the same year. The volume reached the street a decade later, through hip-hop and skate culture.

Today: Manchester and high-waisted trousers

Represent, founded in Manchester in 2011 by George and Mike Heaton, has a T-shirt called the Initial Boxy in its range, made of 230 GSM jersey.

Why the cut is on every rail right now has to do with trousers. A long shirt covers the high waistband of wide jeans and pleated trousers. A short, wide shirt shows it, and the legs look longer.

How to read the fit from a size chart

The label gives you a letter. The silhouette is in two numbers: width and length, measured flat. Divide the width by the length, and you know which shape you are buying before the parcel arrives.

A Gildan 5000, the blank under many shirts at the merch stand, measures about 51 cm wide by 74 cm long in M, according to its spec sheet. That gives 0.69, a classic tall rectangle. An oversized shirt lands more between 0.8 and 0.9: almost as long as the blank, but clearly wider. That is what oversized looks like in numbers.

With boxy, the length moves closer to the width, and with boxy cropped closer still. Slim fit lands below the blank, because the width shrinks and the length stays. There is no standard for this, but the direction holds almost every time.

Drawing of a T-shirt with the measuring points A chest, B length, C sleeve, D sleeve opening, E shoulder

A is the width, B the length. Every shirt has its own chart, you find it on the product page under “Fitting Guide”.

A single shirt can differ slightly from the chart, because most shirts are washed, bleached or distressed by hand after sewing. The boxy models are deliberately shorter, the slim models narrower, YOKO ONO is extra long, and every product page says under “Fitting Guide” how tall the model is and which size they wear. To compare, measure a shirt from your wardrobe that fits you well: flat, from armpit seam to armpit seam and from the highest point of the shoulder down to the hem.

Which fit suits you? Height, shoulders, torso

Blanket body-shape rules are mostly nonsense. This is only about centimetres: where the hem lands and how the fabric falls.

  • Under 1.75 m: boxy shows the waistband with its shorter hem, and your legs look longer. Oversized works just as well, in your normal size.
  • Over 1.90 m: a boxy shirt ends higher on you and sits more like a cropped one, because your torso has more ground to cover than the hem does. Check the length first.
  • Broad shoulders, lots of training: slim shows that off but pulls tight quickly, because cotton jersey without elastane has little give. Boxy is the surprisingly good choice, because the straight shoulder line takes up the width.
  • Narrow shoulders: boxy and oversized add visual width. Slim shows the shoulder as it is.
  • Stomach: heavy boxy and oversized shirts fall straight away from the body and cling nowhere. Slim traces every contour, and relaxed sits in between.
  • Long torso: oversized and relaxed cover the length. Boxy ends higher, and a genuinely high waistband closes the gap.

Boxy T-shirts for men: stick to your size

Size up in a boxy shirt and you get more length, and that is exactly what pushes the box shape towards oversized. Only with very broad shoulders, when the seam in your usual size lands back on the bone, is one size up the right call. How tall the model is and which size they wear is shown on the shirt’s product page under “Fitting Guide”.

Boxy T-shirts for women: go one size down

Our shirts are unisex, women and men wear the same sizes. Even our XS leaves a lot of room. So many women take one size smaller with us than in womenswear, XS instead of S and S instead of M. With high-waisted jeans, the hem of a boxy shirt then lands at about belt height.

Quick styling: ideas for each cut

  • Boxy: straight or wide trousers with a high waistband, so the hem meets the trousers. Worn untucked, the shirt shows its box shape. Tucked in, it loses its straight edge.
  • Oversized: with straight or wide trousers, ideally with the waistband on your hips.
  • Slim fit: with wide trousers, baggy jeans or pleats, and the contrast brings out the narrow line. Fully tucked in with a belt works well. Under an open leather jacket it lies flat, because no fabric sticks out at the bottom.
  • Relaxed: the shirt for under an overshirt or jacket, because no fabric bulks up at the shoulder.

Our T-shirts by cut

All our shirts are unisex and made of 100% cotton, the designs printed or embroidered, almost every piece finished by hand after sewing. We drop in small runs.

  • Boxy oversized: LAW OF ATTRACTION in Vintage White, with hand-painted pink edges, plus paint splashes. The front reads MONEY NEEDS ME in screen print. 300 GSM.
  • Boxy: FUGITIVE with bleached stripes in grey and black and a white PAIN heart on the front, PRICE OF FAME in Faded Concrete with bleach splashes and a sun-faded look. Both in 300 GSM with a rolled sleeve edge and made in Portugal. You’ll find them together under Boxy T-Shirts.
  • Oversized: LIKE KURT in grey and sun-faded, ANTAGONIST in Vintage White with pink lettering, SHOTTIE in black with a distressed hem, all 300 GSM. YOKO ONO is extra long and made in a kimono cut: sleeves and body are cut in one piece, with no shoulder seam. You’ll find all four under Oversized T-Shirts.
  • Relaxed: ENERGY in Washed Black with a heavy vintage wash and a yellow exclamation mark, 250 GSM. The shirt for people who like it loose, but less wide than oversized.
  • Slim fit: ART OF LIFE in 150 GSM combed, ring-spun organic cotton, Vintage White, with a red PAIN heart on the back. DIRT MOUTH is slim fit with shortened, narrow sleeves, 180 GSM, Eggshell with a dirt wash and a metallic print in a grillz look. You’ll find both under Slim Fit T-Shirts.

Skip the tumble dryer, because cotton jersey shrinks in there mostly in length, and after three cycles a boxy shirt becomes a cropped one.

Which leaves the question from the start. Lay your favourite trousers next to the shirt: if the waistband sits at your belly button, go boxy. If it sits on your hips, go oversized. If the trousers are as wide as a tent, slim can go on top.
