What Is Grunge Style?
Quick answer
Grunge style is the look of the Seattle music scene around 1990: a flannel shirt from the second-hand shop, a washed-out band tee, ripped jeans and heavy boots, layered and worn as if nothing mattered. Nobody designed it. It came out of the rain of the Pacific Northwest and out of empty bank accounts. Ever since Marc Jacobs put it on the runway in 1992 and got fired for it, it has come back every few years.
What is grunge style in simple terms?
The clothes of the Seattle grunge bands: a flannel shirt, an old T-shirt or band tee, ripped jeans, boots. Everything a size too big, layered and deliberately careless.
Where does the word grunge come from?
Grunge is slang for dirt, more or less. In 1981 Mark Arm, later the singer of Mudhoney, used it in a fanzine to describe his band at the time, and in the late eighties the label Sub Pop turned it into the tag for the music coming out of Seattle.
What is the difference between grunge and punk?
Punk came out of London and New York in the mid-seventies and set out to provoke with studs and safety pins. Grunge came out of Seattle around 1990, and its second-hand flannel signalled indifference more than anything.
Is grunge 90s or 2000s?
90s. The music took shape in the mid-eighties, the breakthrough came in 1991 with “Nevermind”, and with Kurt Cobain’s death in April 1994 its heyday was over. The early 2000s belong to Y2K.
Where can I buy a grunge T-shirt with distressed details?
Genuinely old band tees with holes turn up in second-hand and vintage shops. New grunge tees, worked by hand, are in the HUSTLE&PAIN online shop: SHOTTIE in black with a raw, frayed hem, LIKE KURT in grey with a sun-faded wash and distressed hem, sleeves and collar, and YOKO ONO with exposed seams distressed by hand. Shipping within Germany is free and delivery takes 2 to 4 working days.
Which streetwear brand suits a rockstar look?
One with washed, heavy shirts that have character, worn with a leather jacket and dark trousers. HUSTLE&PAIN has the H | W 26 collection for exactly that: ANTAGONIST, FUGITIVE, YOKO ONO and LAW OF ATTRACTION, all 300 GSM and worked by hand. How to put the look together is further down under the rockstar outfit.

In detail: Seattle, the runway and your wardrobe
On 3 November 1992, Marc Jacobs sent models down the Perry Ellis runway in New York in checked shirts, floral granny dresses, knitted beanies and Dr. Martens. By early 1993 he was out of a job. The irony came at no extra cost: a look straight out of the second-hand shop, suddenly at designer prices.
What is grunge? Music first, clothes second
Grunge was a sound before it was anything else. In the mid-eighties, bands in Seattle bolted punk and heavy metal together, loud and distorted. The word was first used for a Seattle band in a letter to a fanzine: in July 1981, Mark Arm, later the singer of Mudhoney, described his band at the time, Mr. Epp and the Calculations, in the fanzine Desperate Times as “Pure grunge! Pure noise! Pure shit!”
The scene had a home, the label Sub Pop, founded in 1986 by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman. On 1 August 1988 it put out Mudhoney’s “Touch Me I’m Sick”, first pressed in 800 copies on brown vinyl. On 15 June 1989 came “Bleach”, the debut of a band from Aberdeen, a sawmill town on a Pacific bay in western Washington. The producer Jack Endino billed Nirvana $606.17 for the recording.
Then things moved fast. Pearl Jam’s “Ten” came out on 27 August 1991, Nirvana’s “Nevermind” on 24 September, Soundgarden’s “Badmotorfinger” on 8 October. On 11 January 1992 “Nevermind” reached number 1 on the US album chart, pushing Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous” off the top. Two and a half years after the $606 album.
Why flannel? Rain, timber and second-hand shops
Nobody designed the clothes that went with it. It rains a lot in the Pacific Northwest, the region lived off timber for a long time, and the second-hand shops around Seattle were full of flannel lumberjack shirts, tough jeans and work boots. For musicians with no money, that was the cheapest way to stay warm and dry. In 1992 the New York Times called the clothes cheap and durable. Add band tees with a few previous owners and cardigans that even grandad no longer wanted. It all had little to do with fashion and a lot to do with the weather and the bank balance.
The grunge look on the runway: Marc Jacobs gets fired from Perry Ellis
Jacobs had joined Perry Ellis in 1988 as creative director of the women’s line. His Spring 1993 collection brought Seattle to New York: flannel shirts, floral granny dresses, knitted beanies, Dr. Martens. Jacobs was 29 at the time. In the same season Anna Sui and Christian Francis Roth showed grunge in New York too, but hardly anyone remembered their shows afterwards.
The critics were merciless. “Grunge is ghastly,” ruled the fashion critic Suzy Menkes, and the following season in Milan she handed out badges with exactly that line on them. Perry Ellis parted ways with Jacobs, and the collection never went into production.
A prank shows how little New York understood Seattle. On 15 November 1992 the New York Times printed a “Lexicon of Grunge” full of supposed scene slang: “lamestain” for an uncool person, “swingin’ on the flippity-flop” for hanging out. All of it was invented by Megan Jasper, formerly of Sub Pop, who simply ad-libbed down the phone. She has run the label since 2016.
In November 2018 Jacobs put 26 looks from the old collection back in the shops as Redux Grunge, and Nirvana sued him before the year was out, over a smiley face that looked a lot like the band’s logo. So Jacobs had been right about his 1992 grunge collection, just too early.
Kurt Cobain style: pyjamas, cardigan, dress
Kurt Cobain, born in Aberdeen in 1967, married Courtney Love on 24 February 1992 on the beach at Waikiki, wearing green pyjamas. He had been too lazy for a tuxedo, so the story goes. The same year Nirvana made the cover of Rolling Stone, with Cobain in a T-shirt reading “Corporate Magazines Still Suck”. On the cover of a corporate magazine, mind you.
Another shirt made a musician famous. Cobain was photographed again and again in a T-shirt with the cover of “Hi, How Are You”, a 1983 cassette by the songwriter Daniel Johnston with a drawing of a frog on it. Until then, Johnston was known mostly to the people he had handed one of his tapes to at McDonald’s in Austin.
In the video for “In Bloom”, released as a single at the end of November 1992, Nirvana restage a wholesome early-sixties TV show, sometimes in suits, sometimes in dresses.
On 18 November 1993 the band recorded their MTV Unplugged in New York. Cobain wore a green mohair cardigan, still the template for every grunge cardigan. With Cobain’s death in April 1994, the heyday of grunge was over. His look wasn’t.
Courtney Love and kinderwhore: grunge style for women
The female grunge look was shaped above all by Courtney Love, later the singer of Hole, and Kat Bjelland, later of Babes in Toyland. In the mid-eighties they played together in Pagan Babies, shared a flat and borrowed each other’s clothes. To this day the two can’t agree on which of them invented the look.
It goes by the name kinderwhore, a word best left untranslated. The uniform: babydoll dresses with Peter Pan collars, slips, torn tights, hair clips, smudged red lipstick and Mary Janes or boots. Little-girl clothes, worn to pieces. The look really took off in 1994 with Hole’s video for “Miss World”, and afterwards teen magazines like Seventeen and Sassy printed guides on how to copy it.
Otherwise, women in the scene wore the same as the men, mixed differently: a flannel shirt over a slip dress, layers of check, chokers, dark lipstick.
Typical grunge clothing: what it includes and why
- Checked flannel shirt: open over the T-shirt or tied round the waist, ideally a size too big, because it started out as the warm layer over everything else.
- Washed-out T-shirt or band tee: the base of almost every grunge outfit. Typically it looks as if it has been through a lot of washes, because hardly anything in this look seems new.
- Long sleeve under the T-shirt: the classic layering trick, because Seattle was rarely warm enough for a single shirt.
- Cardigan: chunky, long, ideally with a dropped stitch. Cobain at Unplugged is the one to copy.
- Jeans: washed out, open at the knees, on the wide side. Around 1992 even seventies flares came back.
- Slip dress or floral dress: over a tight T-shirt, or with an open flannel shirt on top.
- Dr. Martens or Chucks: Docs started out in Bavaria. The army doctor Klaus Märtens built himself a shoe with an air-cushioned sole after a skiing accident in 1945, and in 1947 he and Herbert Funck started production in Seeshaupt on Lake Starnberg, south of Munich. On 1 April 1960 the British company Griggs launched the 1460: eight eyelets, cherry red, named after the date.
- Colours: grey, black, olive, burgundy, navy, all slightly faded. Neon and shine hardly turned up in Seattle.
Grunge T-shirts and rock T-shirts: what to look for
With the grunge look, the shirt does half the work. A brand-new band tee with a glossy print sets up a contrast next to an old flannel shirt, while a washed-out one blends in. A good grunge T-shirt is washed out, the hems are open, and the fabric is heavy enough to keep its shape for years. A thin shirt just looks old after a few washes.
And the shirt of a band whose songs you don’t know? We’re with Cobain and his Daniel Johnston shirt: wear what you actually like.
In our range, a men’s rock T-shirt and a women’s one are the same shirt, because every cut is unisex. All of them are 100% cotton, the designs printed or embroidered. At the moment we do almost all of the screen printing, bleaching and paint splashes ourselves, by hand:
- LIKE KURT: the name gives away who we had in mind. Grey, oversized, 300 GSM, sun-faded wash, bleached patches, frayed hems. Works well under an open flannel shirt.
- FUGITIVE: bleached stripes in grey and black, acid wash, white PAIN heart on the front. Boxy with a rolled sleeve edge and cut a little shorter, so it goes with high-waisted jeans.
- PRICE OF FAME: Faded Concrete with bleach splashes and a sun-faded look, also boxy.
- SHOTTIE: black, oversized, 300 GSM, distressed hem, embroidered label. The shirt for under a leather jacket.
- ENERGY: washed black with a heavy vintage wash and a yellow exclamation mark, relaxed fit in 250 GSM. It sits closer to the body, which is why it works well under a cardigan.
- YOKO ONO: extra long, kimono cut with no shoulder seam, marble wash, embroidery on the back. Made for layering over a long sleeve.
What Does GSM Mean on T-Shirts? explains 300 GSM in more detail, and Vintage Wash on T-Shirts covers sun-faded and bleach. You’ll find more washed shirts in our Vintage T-Shirts collection.
Grunge outfits for men: three formulas
- Seattle 1991: LIKE KURT, an open flannel shirt in red or green, washed-out straight jeans with an open knee, black Docs. Add a beanie and it gets even more Seattle.
- Unplugged: ENERGY under a chunky cardigan in olive or brown, a size too big, dark jeans, worn-out Chucks.
- Winter layers: a grey long sleeve with YOKO ONO over it, an open corduroy jacket like the ones Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell wore, wide jeans, boots.
Grunge outfits for women: three formulas
- High waist and boxy: FUGITIVE or PRICE OF FAME with wide high-waisted jeans, a flannel shirt tied round the hips, Chucks.
- Slip dress with flannel: a black or floral slip dress, a tight T-shirt underneath, an open checked shirt on top, eight-eyelet Docs.
- Kinderwhore, low-key: a babydoll dress or miniskirt, laddered tights, Mary Janes or boots, a long cardigan over the top. One hair clip keeps it low-key, more clips make it louder.
We only split the formulas into men and women so they’re easier to find. Cobain stood in front of the camera in a dress in the “In Bloom” video, and in Seattle everyone wore the flannel shirt anyway.
Grunge vs. punk vs. Y2K: the difference
The three get mixed up all the time, even though they want opposite things.
- Punk: London and New York, mid-seventies. In London, Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren sold the clothes for it in their shop SEX on the King’s Road, and it was McLaren who came up with the name Sex Pistols. Safety pins, studs, bondage trousers, tartan, mohicans, painted leather jackets. Punk wants to provoke.
- Grunge: Seattle, around 1990. Musically a child of punk, but the opposite when it came to clothes: flannel, second-hand, everything stretched out of shape. Grunge wants nothing at all, and that is exactly what made it stand out.
- Y2K: the years around the turn of the millennium. Velour tracksuits from Juicy Couture, trucker caps from Von Dutch, low-rise jeans, shine, logos, a love of gadgets. In other words, everything grunge never wanted to be. More on that in Y2K style.
Punk and grunge share Docs and check. The punk tore his clothes and pinned them back together with safety pins. The grunge musician just put his on. Offshoots like soft grunge, born on Tumblr and at its peak around 2014, with pastels and flower crowns, have little in common with Seattle apart from the laddered tights.
Rockstar outfit: grunge with a leather jacket
Grunge is the rehearsal room, the rockstar outfit is the stage. The base stays the same, but everything gets darker and sharper: black instead of washed out, leather instead of flannel, a slimmer line.
The leather jacket has a pedigree. In 1928 Irving Schott launched the Perfecto in New York, named after his favourite cigar. In the seventies the Ramones wore it. The slim line came later: Hedi Slimane, creative director of Dior Homme from 2000 to 2007, made the tight, skinny silhouette famous, and it has stuck to every rock stage ever since.
The formula: SHOTTIE or ENERGY, a black leather jacket, black straight jeans, boots, a single silver ring. Our current collection H|W 26 is called Rockstar Attitude for a reason.
Why grunge keeps coming back
Grunge comes back whenever fashion gets too polished. In March 2013 Hedi Slimane, by then at Saint Laurent, sent babydolls, checked shirts and sloppy cardigans down the runway at the Grand Palais in Paris. In the early 2020s, TikTok and Olivia Rodrigo’s album “Sour” brought back the kinderwhore look, babydoll and laddered tights included. Grunge needs no logo and no money, only pieces with a past.
Wearing grunge: three ideas
- One main piece or the lot, because a checked shirt on its own already sets an accent, and with a band tee, ripped jeans, beanie and Docs added you are wearing the full Seattle look.
- Real wear looks irregular, because every rip and every wash turns out differently. Printed-on rips and artificially aged prints look more even.
- A wide cut or a size up: a wide cut sits on the shoulders, while a bigger size hangs loosely there and ends up longer.
In 1993 Marc Jacobs lost his job over a few checked shirts. In 2018 he sold the same looks all over again. The checked shirt from the second-hand shop in Seattle was still cheaper.
