What Does Cropped Mean?
Quick answer
In March 2015, US college sport banned Ezekiel Elliott’s tucked-up jersey, and in American sports media the new rule was soon known as the crop top ban. Cropped means cut short or trimmed. A cropped T-shirt is deliberately cut shorter than a normal one and, depending on the model, ends at the waistband, at the hip or already above the belly button.
Cropped at a glance
- Cropped: cut short, trimmed. It always means the length, never the width
- Boxy cropped: wide through the chest and shoulders, ends at the waistband
- Slim & cropped: narrow, ends at the hip, the belt stays visible
- Crop top: ends above the belly button, usually tight
- Trousers: waistband where the shirt ends, straight or wide cuts work well
- Jacket: short like a bomber, denim jacket or leather jacket, or long and open
- Fabric: heavy, so the hem doesn’t ride up when you move
- Size: your normal one, a size up makes the shirt longer too
Quick questions
What does cropped mean in fashion?
Cut short or trimmed, from the English verb to crop, which means to cut off or cut short. In fashion, cropped means that a piece is deliberately shorter than the normal cut.
Can men wear cropped T-shirts?
Yes. For men, it usually means boxy cropped: wide and so short that the hem ends at the waistband. With high-waisted trousers no skin shows, and the legs look longer. A boxy shirt without the cropped is only slightly shorter than normal.
Which trousers go with a cropped T-shirt?
Ones whose waistband sits where the shirt ends: straight or wide jeans, pleated trousers, cargo trousers and, for women, high-waisted skirts too. With low trousers a strip of skin stays free, and the look heads towards a crop top.
How do you shorten a T-shirt yourself?
Put the shirt on, mark the length with chalk, then lay it flat and cut straight across, one to two centimetres longer than you want, because the cut edge of plain jersey curls up. You won’t end up with a boxy shirt, since it lacks the width.
Which boxy cropped T-shirt is worth buying?
One in heavy fabric, from around 250 GSM, otherwise the short hem rides up when you move and the boxy shape collapses. Our PRICE OF FAME and FUGITIVE are 300 GSM and boxy, so slightly shorter but not cropped. Our cropped shirt is DIRT MOUTH, a narrow slim fit shirt that ends at the hip.
In detail: the word, the length, the history and how to wear it
Elliott, then a running back for the Ohio State Buckeyes, tucked his jersey up under his shoulder pads until his stomach was bare. He simply liked to show a bit of stomach, he explained, a question of style. A little over ten years later, the German online retailer Otto has a category of its own for men’s cropped T-shirts, and no governing body gets upset any more.
What does cropped mean? From the field to the wardrobe
The word is older than any T-shirt. In Old English, cropp meant the top of a plant, an ear of grain or a cluster of blossoms, and also a bird’s crop. The German word Kropf is related. In modern English, crop mostly means the harvest, and the verb to crop means to cut the top off a plant, to cut hair short, to dock an animal’s ears or tail.
Cropped is the past participle, so trimmed or cut short. Anyone who trims a photo on their phone is cropping it, and that is exactly the sense the word has in fashion: a piece that is deliberately shorter than the usual cut. German fashion talk has taken it over as gecroppt.
It always means the length, never the width. A cropped jumper ends above the waist, a cropped jacket at the waistband, cropped jeans a little above the ankle, roughly like 7/8-length trousers. On a T-shirt, the hem sits higher than on a normal shirt. How much higher is up to each brand.
How short is a cropped T-shirt?
There is no fixed length. On the body, though, the lengths sort themselves out cleanly:
- Normal T-shirt: covers the belt and reaches roughly to the middle of the fly.
- Boxy cropped: ends at the waistband. Standing straight, the hem rests on the belt. Raise your arms and a strip of skin shows.
- Slim & cropped: cut narrow and ends at the hip, the belt stays visible.
- Crop top: ends above the belly button, sometimes just under the chest.
If you’re ordering online, take a shirt that fits you well, lay it flat and measure straight down from the highest point of the shoulder at the collar to the hem. Then compare that with the length in the size chart, and hold the tape measure against yourself once, because that shows you where the new hem will land. With cropped shirts this is especially worthwhile, since lengths vary widely between brands.
Cropped, boxy cropped, crop top: the difference
In shops, the three often end up in the same category. On the body, they have little in common.
The crop top is the midriff-baring piece: usually tight, often rib knit or stretch, as a tank top, bandeau or short shirt. Skin is part of the plan here.
Cropped T-shirt is the umbrella term for any shirt with a shortened length. It can fit narrow like a baby tee or normally wide.
Boxy cropped is the shape men almost always mean today. Wide through the chest and shoulders, the sides fall straight, the shoulder seam drops a little over the shoulder, and the length is short. Laid flat, the shirt looks almost square, hence the name. It rarely shows any stomach, because it is worn with high-waisted trousers. A boxy fit T-shirt without the word cropped is likewise wide and shorter than oversized, just not quite as short. Cropped oversized is basically the same as boxy cropped, usually with even more width and an even lower shoulder. How boxy, oversized and slim sit next to each other is shown in our comparison Boxy vs. Oversized vs. Slim Fit.
History of the cropped T-shirt: from banned belly button to boxy cut
The sixties: a belly button as a broadcasting problem
A sitcom shows how touchy a strip of stomach once was. In “I Dream of Jeannie” (1965 to 1970), Barbara Eden played a genie in a short top, and her belly button was not allowed to be seen on NBC. The trousers had to sit above the navel, and when that wasn’t enough, fabric and skin-coloured make-up helped. Only with the sexual revolution of the late sixties and early seventies did short tops become widely accepted.
The eighties: aerobics, football and Johnny Depp
The eighties brought out the scissors. With the aerobics boom and “Flashdance” (1983), cut-off tops became an everyday thing, and Madonna wore a mesh top that bared her midriff in the video for “Lucky Star”.
This time the men joined in. American football had shortened jerseys. Prince wore a midriff-baring top in London in 1986, and Johnny Depp played his first film role, in “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984), in half a football jersey.
The nineties and 2000s: Will Smith, Britney and the knot
In “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” (1990 to 1996), Will Smith wore half shirts. Later he put the blame on his friends: a half shirt on national television, the verdict went, simply wasn’t done. After that the short cut almost completely vanished from menswear, and a crop top historian told the BBC how sad he was about it.
For women it went the other way. In 1998, Britney Spears knotted her school shirt above her stomach in the video for “...Baby One More Time”, and the idea was her own. In the early 2000s, the short top belonged with low-rise jeans the way rhinestones belong on a flip phone, and Britney popularised those in the US as well. What that look is like today is covered in our article on Y2K style.
Since the mid-2010s: boxy cropped for men
In the mid-2010s the short shirt came back for men. Wikipedia names Kid Cudi and Zac Efron alongside Ezekiel Elliott. It suits wide jeans and high-waisted pleated trousers: a long shirt covers the high waistband, while the short, wide shirt shows it and makes the legs look longer. Uniqlo now sells a unisex shirt with a boxy, short cut in the Uniqlo U Crew Neck, and small labels do anyway.
Cropped T-shirt for men: how to wear the short cut
The trousers make the look. A boxy cropped shirt ends at the waistband. If the waistband sits where the shirt stops, around the height of the belly button or just below it, you get a clean line. With low-rise jeans a gap opens between hem and waistband, and skin shows.
Wide trousers go well with it. Wide and short on top, wide and long below, the waist as a clean line in between: the cut is made for that proportion. With skinny jeans, the same shirt looks very wide on top and very narrow below. Straight or wide jeans, pleated trousers, carpenter trousers and high-waisted cargo trousers all work well. Since the belt is now in view, it becomes part of the outfit: plain leather looks calm, a big buckle makes a statement.
Jackets follow the same logic. A bomber, a denim jacket and a short leather jacket end at roughly the height of the shirt and hold the line. A long coat goes over it open, and then it frames the outfit.
And in autumn? A slim long sleeve under the boxy cropped shirt, two fingers longer at the hem. That keeps you warm, because your back isn’t bare the moment you bend over.
Outfit formulas for men
Our boxy shirts aren't cropped, but they're short enough for the same formulas:
- The classic: FUGITIVE, wide, straight jeans in a dark wash, leather belt, black boots. The stripes stop exactly at the belt.
- With pleats: PRICE OF FAME with black high-waisted pleated trousers, white socks, flat sneakers. The bleach splashes take the trousers out of the office.
- Autumn: PRICE OF FAME over a white long sleeve, black cargo trousers, open bomber.
Cropped T-shirt for women: midriff-baring or ending at the waistband
Women have more choice with cropped shirts, because showing the midriff has been part of womenswear for decades. The real question is which length goes with which trousers.
With a midriff-baring shirt, the waistband decides how much skin shows. A high waistband leaves a narrow strip, a low one a wide strip, which looks sportier.
The boxy cropped shirt is the version with less skin. It ends at the waistband of high-waisted jeans, shows hardly any skin when you walk and still sets the waist high. Over a satin slip dress it visually turns the dress into a skirt. That works better with heavy fabric, because the shirt doesn’t cling to the satin.
Unisex shirts often come up bigger for women. Impericon (a German merch retailer), for instance, advises ordering one size smaller than usual for its unisex merch shirts. Anyone who wears an S in womenswear should therefore compare the chest width in the size chart with a shirt of their own, rather than simply ordering an S.
Outfit formulas for women
- Baby tee line: DIRT MOUTH with wide jeans at a mid or high rise, a slim belt, flat shoes. The shirt ends at the hip, and the belt stays in the picture.
- With a skirt: FUGITIVE with a satin or denim midi skirt, plus boots. The stripes end at the skirt’s waistband.
- Worn-in suit: PRICE OF FAME under an open, wide blazer, with high-waisted suit trousers and loafers.
Who can wear cropped shirts? Height, torso, stomach
Anyone who fancies it. Here is how the cut looks on different bodies:
- Shorter people: the short shirt pulls the visible waist upwards, and the legs look longer without any heel.
- Long torsos: with a crop top, a lot of skin shows between hem and trousers. With boxy cropped and trousers that really are high-waisted, the gap stays short.
- Stomach is no reason to rule it out. A boxy cropped shirt in heavy fabric falls straight away from the body and clings nowhere, and with high trousers it shows not a centimetre of skin. Thin, tight cropped shirts, by contrast, cling and show the shape.
- Narrow shoulders gain width from the boxy cut. Broad shoulders can carry it just as well. Wide trousers balance top and bottom, narrow ones emphasise the shoulders.
Try the shirt on once with your arms raised. If it rides up above the belly button, it is more crop top than boxy cropped. The test is worth it, because you raise your arms more often than you think: on the grab rail on the train or at the top shelf.
Our short T-shirts: FUGITIVE and PRICE OF FAME are boxy, DIRT MOUTH is cropped
With a short shirt, the fabric is half of the cut. Thin jersey collapses in on itself, rides up when you move and clings to the body. At 300 GSM, meaning 300 grams of cotton per square metre, the hem stays where it belongs and the sides fall straight down.
FUGITIVE is boxy in 300 GSM, so wide and slightly shorter than a normal shirt, but not cropped. The bleached stripes in grey and black look irregular and faded after the acid wash. On the front sits the white PAIN heart in screen print, and the sleeve edges are rolled. Horizontal stripes on a short, wide shirt emphasise the width. High-waisted, wide trousers pick up that width below.
PRICE OF FAME has the same cut in Faded Concrete, a washed-out concrete grey with a sun-faded look. The bleach splashes land somewhere different on every shirt, because each one is bleached individually. A screen-printed motif on the front, and again a rolled sleeve edge. FUGITIVE and PRICE OF FAME are made in Portugal.
DIRT MOUTH is cut narrow and cropped, a slim fit with short, narrow sleeves, in 180 GSM ring-spun cotton. It ends at the hip and leaves the belt visible. Eggshell with a dirt wash, a screen print with a metallic effect in a grillz look, open raw hems. Lighter and tighter, closer to the baby tee of the 2000s than to the boxy wave.
All three are unisex and made of 100% cotton. You’ll find the boxy models together under Boxy T-Shirts. Take your normal size, because a size up makes the shirt wider and also longer. Leave the tumble dryer out of it, because cotton shrinks in there, and a short shirt has not a centimetre to spare.
From 2015, Ezekiel Elliott would have had to sit out a play for every tucked-up jersey. The NCAA never wrote a rule for the street.
